Branching OUT: The Power of Aftercare

When a family moves into a home of their own, it is a moment worth celebrating. But we also know that it is a moment that can bring trepidation and anxiety. It is the end of their shelter stay, but also the beginning of a new journey. And that is why our support does not have to end when a family leaves shelter. Through Branching OUT, our voluntary aftercare program, families can continue building the skills, connections, and confidence that help turn a new home into a lasting one. Families can participate in Branching OUT for up to 12 months after leaving shelter, giving them time and space to navigate the realities of maintaining housing while building towards their next goals.

Branching Out builds on the relationships and resources families already developed at FMF. Families have access to case management focused on self-reliance and stability, enrichment opportunities such as workshops, job fairs, and community health partnerships, and supportive services through community partners and individualized coaching. The goal is not to create dependence on services, it is to help families strengthen their own networks and learn to use skills and problem-solving tools so that when a challenge arises, they are more prepared to meet it. And national research on homelessness services shows that remaining available to families as they transition, helps minimize the threats to housing stability if changes to employment, benefits, transportation, or other challenges occur.

Our own data tells us the same story. Continued connection, during the first-year of housing, matters. Families that participate in Branching OUT are 2-3 times more likely to remained stably housed at the end of the year. Time and again, we see families use aftercare to move from simply maintaining a lease to building a future: strengthening employment skills, connecting with community resources, and gaining confidence in their ability to handle what comes next. As housing and other costs increasingly cost-burden families, skills and tools become adaptability and self-sufficiency.

The Gift of Thoughtful Giving

November marks Youth and Family Homelessness Awareness Month - and the unofficial start of the holiday season! It’s a time when generosity shines, and when our community shows up in the most heartfelt ways to support kids and families experiencing homelessness.

At Families Moving Forward, we are continually humbled by the kindness of those who give; whether through volunteering, donating items, or making financial gifts, every offering has profound impact. As the holidays approach, we wanted to take a moment to share why we ask for certain donations in specific conditions - and how your thoughtful giving makes a meaningful difference.

Why “New” Matters

When we ask for new items, it’s not about perfection or judgement of your items - it’s about dignity. Many of the parents and children we serve have experienced trauma and loss. Receiving something new - fresh bedding, unopened cleaning supplies, a new toy - can restore a sense of self-worth and normalcy. It tells families: You are worthy of care and comfort.

Choice also plays a big role in healing. By providing new items, we can offer families options - letting them select what best fits their needs and style, just as any of us would in our own homes.

Why We’re Thoughtful About Space

Both in our shelter and in the homes families move into, space is limited. We want to make sure families have what they need to thrive - without being overwhelmed by more than they can manage or store. Our staff works with our guests to carefully curate wish lists with this in mind, ensuring donations are practical, empowering, and easy to transport when families transition into permanent housing.

Stewardship and Sustainability

We also take seriously our responsibility to be good stewards of every donation. Each item represents your time, effort, and care. By minimizing waste and focusing on what families truly need, we ensure that every gift is used well - and that we honor your generosity with integrity.

Beyond Goods: Building Skills and Stability

Many of the items on our wish lists help families build independence - from cooking and cleaning supplies that support daily living, to bedding and home goods that create a sense of stability. These gifts directly support our mission of helping parents and children move toward lasting self-sufficiency.

Giving Responsibly: A Few Tips

If you’re inspired to give this season, here are a few ways to make the most impact:

  • Check the wish list first. We keep it updated to reflect real-time needs. View Here.

  • When in doubt, ask! Our team is always happy to clarify what’s most needed or how to arrange a drop-off. Please reach out to Maryn Leonard, maryn@fmfnc.org, or 919.683.5878 x 31.

  • Consider a financial gift. Monetary donations help us fill in the gaps and respond quickly to emerging needs. Donate Here.

  • Partner with purpose. If you represent a business, civic group, or faith community, reach out - we love building ongoing partnerships that strengthen our network of care. And we are happy to help you work with your community to educate and advocate for meaningful impact, for everyone.

Gratitude Above All

However you choose to give - whether by donating a comforter, volunteering your time, or sharing our mission with others - you are part of the story. Every act of generosity helps families reclaim stability, confidence, and hope.

Thank you for showing up, not just during the holidays, but all year long. Together, we’re building a Durham where every family has the chance to thrive.
