Director of Programs & residential Services

The Director of Programs & Residential Services (DPRS) provides strategic and operational leadership for Families Moving Forward’s emergency shelter and family programs. This senior leader ensures high-quality, trauma-informed, and compliant services for families experiencing homelessness while supervising multidisciplinary program and residential services teams.

The DPRS maintains a regular onsite presence and engages directly with families, staff, volunteers, and community partners. This role also serves as a key organizational leader and liaison within local and state homeless services systems.

Early Childhood coordinator

The Early Childhood Coordinator is responsible for supporting families with children, Birth through Pre-K, and pregnant mothers. Current programmatic support includes developmental screenings, developing and overseeing volunteer-led workshops and activities, conducting volunteer training, and leading the agency in appropriate early childcare practices. This work requires being onsite, in person, and working directly with families and children residing at the shelter, as well as volunteers and staff.

White Flag Shelter manager (temporary/seasonal)

The White Flag Shelter Manager oversees nightly operations of Durham’s temporary cold-weather family shelter. This position supervises Overnight Shelter Monitors, ensures a safe and trauma-informed environment for families with dependent children, and supports the overall functioning of the shelter during weather-activated nights.

The Shelter Manager coordinates staffing, oversees onsite operations, assists with participant needs, and ensures accurate and timely reporting to the Director of Programs & Residential Services.

White Flag Overnight shelter monitor (temporary/Seasonal)

The Overnight Shelter Monitor ensures the safety, security, and well-being of families during overnight shelter hours. This is a trauma-informed, low-barrier shelter serving families with dependent children. Employees must uphold strict confidentiality and professional conduct while supporting vulnerable populations.

Shelter operates on an as needed basis during cold weather nights, there are no guaranteed hours, as it is weather dependent.

Team Associate

Team Associates (TA) are a vital part of the Families Moving Forward organization.  TAs are responsible for assisting with the overall functioning of the emergency shelter, including maintaining a peaceful, safe, supportive, and orderly environment. The position serves families with dependent children (up to 20 households) and includes basic orientation (services, rules, & policies), assistance with basic immediate needs, de-escalating conflict, and being a stable, welcoming presence.

This is a part-time position requiring early morning, weeknight evening, and/or weekend availability.
