Participatory Budgeting $50,000 Grant
Families Moving Forward is honored to be among some of Durham's most impactful nonprofits in this year's Participatory Budget Grant Program.
If awarded, the $50,000 in grant funding would extend our aftercare services from 12 months to 18 months for the families who have moved out of our emergency shelter and into permanent housing. This extra time is in response to the pandemic and because the first 18 months after experiencing homelessness is critical for families as they get back on their feet. Our two-generational approach to ending family homelessness allows us to engage with all family members in order to reduce the long-term effects of homelessness. For all 5 years since we began our aftercare program, we have had ZERO returns to shelter - a huge feat that would not happened without the advocacy and support of our dedicated aftercare staff.

Wolfpack at FMF!
The weather is warming up and that means it's time for yard work! An amazing group of NC State students, in conjunction with Service Raleigh, spent a Saturday volunteering on-site to lay down new mulch for our garden and playground.
Thank you so much to Michael, Kennedy, Becca, Irene, Katelyn, and the entire Service Raleigh team for your amazing work! Did you know that Service Raleigh is an annual citywide day of service started in 1998 by NC State's Student Government and Park Scholars? Each year, volunteers from the university and surrounding community unite to undertake a variety of projects, each of which provides much-needed assistance to local organizations.
If you want to get involved and volunteer with us please contact our Volunteer Engagement Associate Imani Vincent at imani@fmfnc.org or check out our volunteer page at https://fmfnc.org/volunteers 2021 Row Challenge For the second consecutive year, FMF's Board Chair John Bowman is challenging his friends to support his efforts to raise funding for Families Moving Forward while he competes to complete a 5k on his row machine! To John's credit, he actually rowed a 10k last year and raised over $5,000. This year, he has challenged 4 of his friends to join him in this year's challenge, with a collective fundraising goal of $10,000.
Shout out to John Bowman (Team Captain), Bo Glenn, Joe Marion, Larry Tilley, and our own Ryan Fehrman for joining the team this year!
Click here to visit his team's fundraising page. If you would like to contribute, you can donate to the team or the individuals (scroll to the bottom) These guys are competitive!
Logistics: Five row machines will be set up in John Bowman's driveway for the 2021 25K Row Challenge, beginning on May 12th at 8:30 am. It will be live-streamed via the Families Moving Forward's Facebook page, so be sure to check it out! Thanks to the downtown Durham Y for supporting this fundraiser with usage of their machines!
"SONAM and Friends" Vivaldi Music Video
Our friend Dr. Allan Friedman (Director of Music and Community Engagement at Judea Reform Congregation) has invited Families Moving Forward to partner with him and his group to be the beneficiary of a virtual concert! He has put together a music video of singers, orchestra, and dancers on a classical music piece by Vivaldi.
The video will make it's official debut on Sunday, but our supporters are able to see it first! Click the link below!
