Friends,
On July 26th, we hosted our first Chefs for Change dinner since March of last year. The energy was palpable as friends and supporters gathered for the first time in over a year. We had an opportunity to update the attendees about how FMF has adapted during the pandemic and also honored Ryan Fehrman as he becomes executive director at North Carolina’s Coalition to End Homelessness.
As FMF board chair John Bowman and I presented Ryan with an award for his 19 years of service to FMF’s mission, Ryan gave an impassioned speech. “We never rested on our laurels - we always tried to do better,” he said. The attendees viewed a heartfelt video message from Mayor Steve Schewel thanking Ryan for his advocacy and leadership, and then Mayor Pro Tem Jillian Johnson read a Proclamation formally declaring July 26 as “Ryan Fehrman Day” in Durham. The night continued with an incredible meal from Chef Damion Moore with Dame’s Chicken and Waffles.
I am proud to serve as interim executive director while our board conducts a national search for our next permanent ED with support from moss + ross. We will be sure to share the job description when it is ready and encourage you to share it within your networks.
Please know that the staff, board, and volunteers remain committed to serving families with children in the best ways that we can, while simultaneously navigating the ever-changing nature of the pandemic. As many of our kids and grandkids at home head back to school, please be thinking of the families at FMF who are also anxious about the start of a new school year. Remember the volunteers who have been champions for our families virtually over the past year and a half, and are now planning to come back onsite. Thank you for continuing to support our families and children.
I welcome the opportunity to meet with you, a group you belong to, or people you want to introduce to us – in person or virtually. Until then, I look forward to hearing from you.
In Community,
Shana Carignan
Welcome Back Rotational Volunteers!
FMF is all abuzz in anticipation for the return of our volunteers back onsite! We are excited to announce that starting August 24th we will be bringing back in-person volunteers and programming! During the pandemic we had made the transition to virtual programming, but there is simply no replacement for having our rockstar volunteers onsite! Not to worry - strict safety protocols are in place to ensure that both the families at FMF and our volunteers are cared for, including requiring vaccination verification from our onsite volunteers and proper mask wearing for all.
With this change we are looking for volunteers to step up and help us restart our in-person programming! If you are interested please visit fmfnc.org/volunteers or contact our Volunteer Coordinator Associate Imani Vincent (imani@fmfnc.org) for more information about how you can help.

All recurring gifts through Classy will stop processing in September. Please take a moment to check your email for a message from brady@fmfnc.org, and reach out if you have been contacted.
